The paintings collection is filled with iconic works—dating from the 18th to the early 20th century—by such masters as John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and John Singer Sargent. The centerpiece of the new, sky-lit installation is one of the best-known works in all of American art, Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze’s massive 1851 canvas Washington Crossing the Delaware.
