Fundación Mapfre presents Imogen Cunningham
On 18 September 2012, Fundación Mapfre, Madrid will present a major retrospective of the work of renowned American photographer Imogen Cunningham (1883 – 1976).
Imogen Cunningham decided very young to pursue photography, and went on to devote her life to the medium. Her trajectory was formed by a series of complex choices which led her to engage with leading artists of her day. She became an important figure in shaping modernism in photography.
This autumn, Fundación Mapfre presents for the first time in Europe some 200 prints that showcase key aspects of Cunningham's artistic oeuvre and the connections between them. Throughout the exhibition, the public can gain a sense of Cunningham’s technical expertise: from different photographic processes to the artistic darkroom techniques she pursued. Portraits, nudes, plant forms, street views, architecture and experimental double exposures are all well represented.
As with all Fundación Mapfre exhibitions, entry is free. The Imogen Cunningham show will run until 20 January 2013.
